Why hire a lawyer? The argument for having an attorney.

I never thought I would have to argue about the significance of having an attorney. Our
constitution was formed with the involvement of lawyers. Lawyers protect our freedom every
day. Lawyers help people. Lawyers make sure that laws get drafted correctly. Lawyers are what
make our country great. I know that we’re often the butt of many jokes but when you are that
person in trouble the person you often rely on is your lawyer. That being said with the advent of
legal forms readily available at a very minimal cost or for free on the internet many people feel
they no longer need a lawyer. So why hire a lawyer?

Here are a few reasons:
1. Unless you obtain legal forms directly from the court you will be in there is no
guarantee that the forms you get off the internet are state or jurisdiction specific. This
means you may be paying for something worthless that the judge you are in front of
will not approve. Judges are quirky and the forms don’t recognize each individual
judge’s quirks.
2. Legal forms have no liability insurance. Lawyers do. If you do it yourself and you do
it wrong there is no one to collect from for the mistake that you made. If you hire a
lawyer and they do it wrong either they can fix it or they have liability insurance that
you can collect on.
3. Legal forms can’t reason with you. Lawyers can. In family law many clients are
emotional, overwhelmed and can’t think clearly. Objective lawyers who have been
there, done that have the ability to see the areas where you will make mistakes before
you do.
4. If you get a good lawyer it will be less hassle. In other words, if you are like me and
the idea of doing a DIY construction project is downright frightful it could be the
same way for you when it comes to preparing your own legal documents. There is a
cost but peace of mind in knowing that a job is well done because you hired a lawyer.
5. You can’t rely on legal forms later. In other words the benefit of having a relationship
with a lawyer is that you can call them later when problems come up that you didn’t
anticipate and the lawyer can also make referrals to other quality lawyers when you
find out your uncle died, your best friend was in a car accident, or your niece needs a
divorce lawyer. A good lawyer will develop that relationship with you and then you
know that you always have someone in your corner that you can call when legal
problems arise.
